My new Silverlight Blog

Cristian Merighi () 4.44

Visible and browsable on ryoushin.com. Other used technologies: WCF, AJAX, Linq.
This article is obsolete. Some functionalities might not work anymore. Comments are disabled.

I've been neglecting to post on my blog for a long time (3/4 months!) and that's due to many factors: vacations, distressing projects and self-paced learning process on new technologies (Silverlight, WCF, Linq to Anything...)
The RTW version of Silvelright 2 - in particular - pushed me to get engaged in a test project with the goal to examine lacks, strenghts and everything connected to this "tasty" technology...
...What project?...
...my new Blog application!

I'm "moving" from http://www.pacem.it/cmerighi to www.ryoushin.com :) (Ryoushin means "conscience" in japanese)...

The interface is developed entirely in Microsoft Silverlight 2.0.
It gets fed via HtmlBridge and WCF and comes along with the unavoidable limitations of Silverlight itself (one for all, I had to use plugin's Windowless mode to get an immersive experience: that's only for IE and FF on Win).

This project brought me to a new experience level. It hasn't been an easy path, crooked sometimes, but I learned a lot. Looking back I can now easily see different, more attractive and elegant roads.
They'll be good for the next RIA projects...

Take care. Bye.

Awesome Silverlight app! I really like the design - it's great! I could make a comment on your SL web site because it keep saying that my email address was invalid.

that's very cool :) but cpu occupancy rate of over 57% :(

Hi Stone, there are certainly some heavy animations/calculations: -> see the real-time 3D carousel (double-sided faces + reflected!); On my desktop (4core 2.4GHz 4GB-ram) CPU keeps around 15-22% depeding on the layout. On my lap-top (2core 1.66GHz 4GB-ram) there are peeks around 50%. If you rollover the carousel and pause the animation you'll see the usage go down back to 5-10%. I'm sorry for that, but I wanted to give some sort of new interactive experience using 3D... that'll be better when, on Silverlight 3, I'll lean on GPU rendering... ;) Thank you for the feedback!

The new layout is AWESOME ! and the new 3D animation looks really good ! I'd like to know what kind of elements you are using for the render ? - at the moment im struggling with UIElements being too heavy so im converting everthing to non-UIElement (eg. Geometry objects) CPU usage drops from 40% to 0% !!! on static object rendering !

Hi Martin, Thank you. I'm using Polygons (hence UIElements) for rendering btw. They're cozy for the interactivity events and they support filling and can be texturized, How do you handle that with geometries? Do you clip underlying areas?

Really awesome web site - I wish I new how you managed to do the rotating polyhedrons - they are really great.

So you say you load HTML that I can see when going View > Page Source and render it as XAML? Rly?

Where did I say that?! ;) No. I just overlay (when necessary) some html content to the silverlight plugin. The html you see in the source code is for SEO and for Browsers that can't support silverlight in windowless mode.

The text is blurry and uncomforable to read - please fix! Is there a reason it's so blurry - or is it my video card? Other blogs I visit aren't blurry
